1 Forty acres and a mule

Шермана [ Sherman, William Tecumseh], сделанного 16 января 1865: "Каждая семья получит надел до 40 акров пахотной земли". В 1866 Конгресс принял закон, согласно которому конфискованную у южан-плантаторов землю предполагалось поделить между бывшими рабами, однако президент Э. Джексон [ Jackson, Andrew] наложил на него вето. Вопрос о старом законе вновь был поднят в 1994, когда более 20 тыс. негров обратились в налоговое управление с требованием списать с их доходов 43209 долларов - то есть сумму, в которую сегодня оцениваются сорок акров земли и мул. Поводом для этих действий послужила напечатанная в апреле 1993 в журнале "Эссенс" статья экономиста Л. Негры-рабы поверили, что после войны плантации их хозяев будут конфискованы, а имущество разделено между бывшими рабами. Эта вера еще более укрепилась после приказа генерала Шермана [ Sherman, William Tecumseh], отданного в январе 1865, в котором освобожденным рабам было обещано по 40 акров земли, принадлежавшей владельцам плантаций, бежавшим при приближении Армии Союза [ Union Army]. Но ни этот лозунг, ни приказ Шермана не были поддержаны правительством. Более того, попытка Конгресса принять соответствующий закон натолкнулась на вето президента Э.
